In 1993 the most publicly discussed and photohraphed woman in Britain created a sensation by anouncing that she was retiring from public life. She was not a politician, represented no-one, and had made few, if any, memorable public statements. Like a multifaceted hologram, she shifted identity as the light fell on her. Fairy tale princess, fashion leader, media manipulator, devoted mother, fun loving girl, jilted lover, compassionate carer, sad bulimic, Princess Diana appeared at times to posess as many personae as designer gowns. Her treatment by the media reminds us how alive and well if volatile, long standing myths of what it means to be feminine continue to be. This book explores how such myths, chameleon like, have the capacity to both change hue and yet to survive.
